Was visiting Puerto Rico on an MSC cruise and stopped by Save A Gato. Absolutely love Save A Gato!!! It's truly wonderful how they take care of these precious babies. Walked by with cat treats and was instantly surrounded. Would have taken 1 with me if I wasn't on a cruise. The pictures should say it all!!!
I adopted my cat, Chef Mac (previously known as Brooklyn) from Save a Gato in 2024. I cannot recommend them enough. I reached out to them a few months in advance expecting transport to be a lengthy process, but they informed me the process would hardly take longer than a week (flight angels permitting).
I found the adopter interview to be thorough, but not unreasonable. They do expect you to know your stuff and be ready to welcome a cat. But the expectations are completely reasonable, as is the adoption price. They are likely highly competitive with your local shelter in this regard.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit the physical rescue. The staff are so attentive to all the cats both inside and outside of the building. They are really passionate about the work they are doing, and I personally witnessed these folks go above and beyond to help these cats go to good homes anywhere in the US. Even the cats that aren't suitable for homes, they provided significant medical care for to ensure they were safe and ready to return to the Paseo.
Keep up the good work, and here are some cat pics of Mac now that he's all grown up and settled down in Boston!
Visiting the "Fort Cats" was the priority of my recent visit to San Juan. Just knowing their safety is not guaranteed due to the actions of the National Park Service is scary. These cats are cared for, fed and ear-tipped after sterilization so they cannot reproduce. This is the kindest way of caring for stray cats. Please visit and donate if you can - some are friendly, some are timid but they are all sentient beings with emotional lives and just want to live in peace.
Such a sweet place! Doing good things for these cats. They understand the important of capture, neuter/spay, and release. Employees gave us a can of food to feed some of the cats with.
A few cats are very skittish, some are very friendly! As long as you are able to read basic cat body language it should be fine. Lots of cute kitties under a gorgeous tree.
I was lucky to go and visit this sanctuary. It was so lovely and so much fun. It was definitely a high point of my trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
I recommended it to my niece who traveled from Minneapolis and she was smitten. Had the best time.
I’m ready to go back!
