$30 per night for a bunk bed, this is the cheapest hostel in San Juan. All the doors are opened with codes, facility is clean. Comfortable beds, really good kitchen area, good wifi & showers. Location is average, 30 mins walk to the beach, close to train station. The low stars are for the following reasons-
1. Security Reasons - they have the same codes since months, & I have seen a person(previous guest) enter at 3am, since he already know the codes and slept on an empty bed in the dorm and left early in the morning without a reservation.
2. Outdoor seating is limited and fully covered so it's dark. They use a green carpet all over outdoor areas, never seen them clean it. When it rains, it's leaky and the carpet is wet for days and breeding grounds for mosquitoes. They will eat you alive, other hostels don't have this mosquito problem.
3. The manager Carlos, walks around everyday and don't even expect a smile. He doesn't even make an eye contact, same goes to their staff who are young women volunteers (they don't get paid, free bed) from Europe. Some of them are hospitable, but others don't even have common courtesy how to talk to customers.
If you are there for a Night or two, you will not observe much but that security issue is concerning, it's easy to break the locks of the locker or grab your phone from the room while you are sleeping because lot of previous guests have been living on the island for months who know the codes for most of the rooms!
I really had good time but PLEASE BEWARE of the mosquitoes!!! It may or may not be out of their control, but i got bit by them head to toe, for the entire week i was there. The girl that slept beside my bunk bed got bit by one that gave her a severe allergic reaction. Im telling you i put mosquito cream, and the repellent, only to temporarily evade them. I know its not their fault but they could have put some mosquito tents in the first floor. When i came back home recently, i got diagnosed with Dengue, it has been so severe that i couldnt eat for the last few days, couldnt walk and got tons of rashes. My bones ache terribly and everything in my body hurts! I URGE you to take a vaccine if not PLENTY OF REPELLENT! Stay safe.
Their is absolutely no air movement in the building. No fans except one box fan. The artificial grass is nothing but a mosquito den. The refrigerators have dead mosquitoes and other critters and have obviously not been cleaned in ages.
I requested early check in due to flight changes & delay & owner was nice to consider & approved it. I was exhausted , I am grateful. I choose 1802 hostel for location, nearby free buses & local train to Bayamón & San Juan, ferry to Catano $1, markets & coffee places & near Ocean Park beach approx 1 mile , I am a solo traveler & when I visit 🇵🇷 I choose this hostel, clean & friendly owner, thank you. Everything is locked with combination codes so if you get there very early in the morning, you can have management send you the codes over text. Also you never have to worry about losing your keys. Comfortable beds, but bring ear plugs because people snore. Can get anywhere in about 30 minutes by either taking a bus or an e-scooter.
