A must see National Fort in old San Juan! Popular for kite flying! There is a walking trail around the fort overlooking the coast. You will also see lots of harmless cats around the area. Pay $10 to enter the fort and you are able to visit inside the San Cristobal (the biggest) fort within 24 hours.
This walkway along the side of El Morro and the ocean is so beautiful and I would recommend it to almost everyone! It takes maybe 15-25min depending on your speed and if you like to take lots of pictures.
FYI: There is no shade along the whole walkway, make sure to be prepared for the sun if it’s a hot and sunny day.
There will be stairs up to El Morro at the end of the walkway.
10 dollars and I had access to both castles for 2 days of exploring! There was so much to see and so much history you could feel in the forts different rooms, the dark forbidden passages almost seemed ghostly as I imagined soldiers running up the slick stairs in battles past. The cemetary made these feelings so concrete because somehow reading the names of the defenders allowed me to see them more clearly. I explored el Morro alone as a separate excursion from the group I travelled w and am so glad I did 🥳
The backyard of the west castle is beautiful. Surely everywhere is beautiful. The sound of waves hitting rocks made me feel so relaxed. Also, the castle made a shade for me to cool down after walking a long way of the trail. The top of the hill is so pretty to take a picture of the sea, grassland, and the city.
Beautiful walkway around the base of the historic fort. We visited in the the evening and the sunset views over the water were gorgeous! This path is sometimes called the 'catwalk' and it's easy to see why - there are hundreds if not thousands of cats living along the walk and it looks like they are fed well. Some areas smelled a little strong of cats.
