Absolutely not worth the money. I get that this hostel is maybe one of the cheapest in San Juan, but the value you get is absolutely not worth it.
NEGATIVES:
1. As a start, the staff helpfulness is completely non existent. When asked questions they just seem to not know or be able to help with anything, prior and during the stay.
2. On top of that, check in stops at (4pm?!) after which it's self check in. Apparently they send you instructions for that, which of course they failed to do with me. So I was standing in front of the building, at 10 pm, after a long flight, alone on the street at night, without internet, not being able to access. Thank God a man lend me his phone so I could call but this was completely unacceptable.
3. A girl in the hostel had bedbugs, which is already diagusting enough, but their solution was to move her same mattress to another room. Coming back to my point of absolutely cluelessness and helplessness.
4. The hostel is extremely noisy, you can hear the people outside like they're in the room. I was lucky that I stayed during the week and the people in my female dorm were super respectful but otherwise it would have been a terrible sleep. Only last night (thursday) people were loudly talking outside the room for which I had to ask to be quiet, to my surprise it was the volunteer herself. Leading by example...
5. The Wifi didn't work for the entirety of my stay, who knows when that's gonna work. Their excuse: we have so many people it crashed. Well, there's my solution: get proper wifi. Some hospitality basics: WiFi is a must and not a nice-to-have.
6. Beds are comfy but they only provide a super thing blanket (to call it somehow) and that's it.
POSITIVES:
To be honest the only nice thing about this place is the decor and style, and the rooftop. And I really liked the girls in my room but that's completely put of control of this hostel.
So yes, rather pay a bit more and look for a place where you get more value for the price.
Wow, we absolutely loved our stay here! It’s easy to see why this hostel was once rated the best in Puerto Rico by Hostelworld.com—it truly lives up to the hype. We stayed in a private room, which was spotless, smelled amazing, and had excellent air conditioning. The entire space felt clean, comfortable, and secure. The staff was incredibly helpful and welcoming, making our stay even more enjoyable.
If I had to mention anything, the shower’s water pressure could have been stronger, and it would’ve been nice to have cozier blankets to balance out the cool air from the AC. However, these were minor details compared to how wonderful our overall experience was. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting San Juan!
It has good reputation for the past, not for the present. The owner doesn't provide wi-fi to the clients (with all sort of excuses) and he is not reliable if there's a problem. People working in the hostel is nice, but the bed is small, no plugs, rooms to a noisy street... One night, sleeping there, people was about to freeze because the AC. A guy in the dorm room started to hit the machine, desperately, until he achieved to regulate the temperature. Santurcia Hostel is only recommended if you are in Spring Break and you don't care if people talk and open the light of the room while you sleep.
One of the worst hostel experiences I’ve ever had.
I will repeat what many of the other bad reviews have said: hostel etiquette is awful. People were coming in very loudly, slamming doors, and talking loudly until after 3am.
There are plenty of more respectful hostels around San Juan in better locations for a similar price. Skip this one.
Staying here was the best decision I made on my trip in Puerto Rico. It was the cheapest price I could find and ended up being much nicer than the airbnb’s my friends had stayed in. I felt super safe and comfortable here. I am a woman who stayed in the 12 person bunk bed room. You have a full kitchen, dining room, lounge area, and multiple bathrooms to use at any time. You are walking distance from bars like La Placita, delicious coffee shops, grocery stores, yoga studio, a big park, church, and so much more. I spoke with the very kind owner while I was there and the staff was great as well. The only thing I didn’t expect was that hot showers were hard to come by. I don’t believe that was the establishments fault though, I think that is just a problem that Puerto Ricans have to deal with due to government problems.
